The essence of jamaican rum punch is the true jamaican rum...namely "J. Wray and Nephew", your recipe is lacking in that.
Wrong amounts surely?

posted by Paul @ 11:35AM, 8/26/06

I can't believe that this recipe is for 1 serving???? It would blow your head off. 1 cup of barcardi is equal to 8oz or 257ml!!!! The fruit juice alone amounts to 16oz or a pint! Has anyone else got comments on this recipe???
This is not true rum punch

How can this be rum punch without the real Jamaican rum.

Sounds good.
Serving size is one punch bowl

Paul, read the recipe, jamaican drunk, rum tastes like rum when mixed with 5 other ingredients... the brand doesn't matter.
This recipe can't be Jamaican without Wray & Nephew rum.

posted by Allan @ 11:52AM, 2/04/07

Sorry but the first comment is correct. Taste Wray & Nephew... it has a very distinctive flavour that is Jamaica.
Instead of Malibu C. rum try using coconut milk, 1 tin. The second comment re the amount of rum - Wray & Nephew is overproof which will limit the amount used.

Is this recipe geared to the taste of alcohol or the taste of the fruit with a "little" punch from Jamaica?
Wray and Nephew a must

Bacardi 151 is amazing... but to make JAMAICAN rum punch... you need JAMAICAN RUM... Get Wray & Nephew or Appletons to make this recipe...
Best punch ever

I have tried numerous recipes for authentic Jamaican rum punch, and believe me, this is the real deal. It'll knock your socks off. The one serving size is for a punch bowl size. I serve it at parties and give people 8 oz glasses. The ladies love it...incredibly easy to drink. Pour it in a shaker and serve in a martini glass and call it a rum kick martini.

This is by far the best recipe ever for jamaican rum punch.

I use Appleton's rum instead of myers. Appleton from Jamaica mon.

I think you are right. I am sure it is safe to assume that if you are mixing it in a punch bowl that it serves more than one person. Traditionally, punch glasses are 4 oz serving sizes so this shoud make 16-20 servings over crushed ice.
As to the other comment if you prefer JWRAy & Nephew to Bacardi, fgo ahead and use that. Not all Jamaicans are exclusive to J Wray & Nephew. It is entirely a choice of preference.

Real Jamican Rum Punch

posted by Phillip Morris @ 08:33PM, 5/15/07

Rum Punch is a staple in Jamaica, and is the perfect summertime drink. Everywhere you go, you'll find rum punch. There are seemingly endless variations on this classic Jamaican drink, but this recipe is the most basic. This is closest to what I had most often in Jamaica.

The basic measurements are as follows:

1 part sour
2 parts sweet
3 parts strong
4 parts weak
What is used for each part (sour, sweet, strong, and weak) is what provides the endless variations. What I found most often is closest to these ingredients:

1 part fresh lime juice
2 parts grenadine syrup (Note: Anchor Cherry Syrup is more traditional in Jamaica, but harder to find elsewhere.)
3 parts Wray & Nephew Overproof White Rum (or Bacardi Light White Rum)
4 parts water
Mix all ingredients in a pitcher or punch bowl. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving. Serve over ice.
Wrong mixture, follow this and its great

I agree with using real jamaican rums but use what you have and it will do. We ran out of 151 so I substituted spiced rum and it went down the same.

1 cup bacardi 151 or spiced will do as well
1/2 cup Dark Rum
1/4 cup Malibu rum
10 cups pineapple juice (2 large cans)
6 cups orange juice (concentrate mixed up works fine)
1/4 cup lime juice
5 tblsps of Grenadine

mix all together in a large metal tub or bowl. throw in sliced strawberries and pineapple. Before the party take some round tupperware containers and freeze water in them so you have floating pieces of ice to keep the punch cold, ice cubes melt to fast. it was a hit. i made 3 batches to start and we had to make a run for more juice. you'll love it. it has a kick but you won't notice it.
Jamaican Rum Punch (from Bartender Book)

Makes 35 6oz. servings....

1 Pineappple Peeled & Cored
2 Cups Lemon Juice
1/2 Cup Superfine Sugar
1 (750ml) Bottle Light Rum
1 (750ml) bottle Anejo Rum
16 oz. Dark Rum
1 Quart Pineapple Juice
1 & 1/2 Quarts Orange Juice
1 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
1 Teapsoon Ground Cinnamon
1 Teapsoon Ground Mace
1 Teaspoon Ground Allspice
12 oz. Club Soda

Take 1/2 of the pineapple & chop finely. Slice the other 1/2 of the pineapple thinly. In a large bowl, Stir lemon & Sugar together until sugar is dissolved. Add: chopped pineapple, Light Rum, Anejo Rum, Dark Rum, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Mace, Allspace & Club soda. Stir Well. Add 1 large block of ice of ice mold.

Optional: Create your own ice molds using a muffin tin. Fill each muffin tin 3/4 way with water and place pineapple on top. Place in freezer and allow to freeze completely. Release molds by placing tin in large bowl or pan with warm water. Place in punch bowl.

Garnish punch bowl with remaining pineapple slices.

Additional Ideas....
Rather than 1 whole quart pineapple juice, use 3/4 of a quart. Freeze the remaining 1/4 of a quart into muffin tin molds or ice cube trays and use to keep cool rather than ice which ends up watering it down!

....I have never tried this but it came from a bartender book. The ice molds are my own idea and have worked nice in other recipes.

The real thing

Actually Phillip Morris has got this down pat! If you are looking to replicate the real Jamaican taste, his basic recipe is what we Jamaicans use. You can experiment with the sweet aspect of the recipe to get different flavor..ie instead of using grenadine, you can use pineapple juice/guava punch or tropical fruit punch (I use our local Grace brands)

Best Punch Ever

posted by O' @ 01:34PM, 10/27/07

Gale send your friends to me and they will never drink your punch ever again. All you will lose all those ladies you say love it. Jamaican rum punch has to be made with jamaican rum, hence the name. What you are making is rum punch, but stop calling it jamaican, as that is a gross misrepresentation.
